Morning Sickness & How to beat it
How to beat Morning Sickness in Pregnancy
One of the very few downsides of pregnancy is morning sickness. According to the NHS 9 out of 10 pregnant mums will experience morning sickness within the first 12 weeks. For some women, morning sickness can carry on into the 2nd and 3rd Trimesters – right up until the birth! But there are ways to beat it.
What is Morning Sickness?
Morning sickness is different for all women; it can be simply feeling nauseous in the morning, or it can be full blown vomiting throughout the day. Many people don’t realise that ‘Morning Sickness’ is not isolated to mornings – many women can experience the sensation right throughout the day, including when they’re at work or in the middle of the evening’s TV viewings (they really ought to rename it).
It is thought that Morning Sickness is caused by the dramatic changes in hormones during those first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and often coincides with a lack of vitamin B6. However, there doesn’t seem to be a definitive cause for Morning Sickness.
How to beat morning sickness – your survival guide:
* Rest as much as possible – tiredness will drain you and make it all seem worse;
* Keep your fluid intake up to avoid dehydration and beat morning sickness – water and decaf coffee or tea would be best;
* Try and eat something plain and dry before you get out of bed each morning e.g. keep some biscuits next to your bed;
* Beat morning sickness by getting out of bed slowly in the morning. Sudden movements may jolt you and bring on nausea…just like those rollercoasters!
* Eat little and often to avoid bloating and ‘overload’;
* Take some pregnancy-friendly supplements with your evening meal to keep you in good health (pregnacare do a good one);
* Be careful with foods that are sweet or spicy and try to avoid foods that are fatty as they can all aggravate you;
* Try ginger to beat morning sickness– it is known to settle your stomach and is a natural remedy (ginger biscuits are a nice treat too!);
* Keep lemon drops to hand so that you can suck on these and stall the feeling of nausea;
* Keep baby/face wipes and a toothbrush/paste in your handbag – that way you can always freshen up
Finally, if you’re struggling with morning sickness get help and support from your friends and family and always see your doctor or midwife if you have concerns.
Anyone who has experienced morning sickness knows that it isn’t pleasant…but just remember it’s all worth it in the end.
