You are about to go through a life changing, mind altering, body battering experience and it is important that beforehand you have spoken about your hopes and worries with your partner. What kind of parents do you want to be? Do you both know where the baby grows are kept? Who is going to stay at home and who’s going back to work first? Communication with your partner is vital and needs to begin before the arrival of your new baby. This will help alleviate any anxiety you might have been feeling and will make it all the more exciting!
4) Ask for help
Hopefully there are family and friends around you who you can ask for help if you need it. Asking for help and advice will help you to avoid anxiety as a new mum, because you will feel as if you know what to do, or will at least have some idea of how to go about things. It is also important that, if things get too much, you ask for support from others – even if it’s just to come and sit with you, or wash the towels that are piling up in the bathroom!
5) Stock up on essentials!
The last thing you’ll want to do is come home, as a new mum with a newborn baby and have absolutely nothing ready! Where possible, stock up on the bare necessities such as newborn nappies; milk (if bottle feeding), baby wipes, cotton wool, baby grows and sleep suits. Plus, frozen meals, tea, coffee and milk for you and dad!
As a new mum this will be the most exciting time of your life; you will have something so precious and beautiful that you have carried for 9 months and brought into the world. You will love and care for them. The best way to avoid anxiety as a new mum it to accept you’re a new mum – and that’s OK.
