Taking That First Trip Out With Your Newborn Baby

Taking that first trip out with your baby can seem like a daunting task, but there are several ways you can make it easier.

So, you’ve had your beautiful baby and probably spent 5 – 7 days at home, receiving visitors; getting up to feed your baby 3 or 4 times a night; changing nappies and feeding, feeding, feeding. Your cupboards are getting bare, your fridge is starting to look like it has been abandoned and, quite frankly, you’re going a little stir crazy!

It is at this point that you will be thinking about venturing out…after all, you can’t order takeaways forever! Plus, friends and family will be wanting to ‘have a munch’ of the little one.

Taking that first trip out is really important, as it is a big milestone. Therefore it is important for your own confidence that it goes well.

How can you ensure that your first trip out with your newborn goes well?

There are several things you can do to make this milestone easier:

  • Destination - Decide where you are going to go and why; keep it reasonably close by so that your first trip, where possible, isn’t for hours and hours or miles and miles from home.

  • Get Sorted - Once you know where you’re going, why and for how long then you can get yourself sorted. With a good changing bag you can have everything organised and ready to take with you on that first trip out, before getting your little one ready. It is important to remember that you DON’T need to take everything but the kitchen sink!

  • Be practical - You’ll need: a car seat (if travelling by car), nappies, nappy cream, hand gel, at least one spare outfit or baby grow (in case of nappy or sick accidents), wipes, a blanket in case it drops cooler, and enough milk if not breast feeding. There may well be other items you need or want to take – but remember to be sensible. Important phone numbers might be handy and reassure you.

  • Let Someone Know - As this is an important milestone, and you may feel nervous as well as excited, it might be an idea to let someone know where you’re going, just in case. Or – if visiting someone let them know when you’re on your way and what time to expect you. This way, if something were to happen then there will be someone looking out for you. Even better? Take your partner, a friend or a family member along for help and support.

Finally… Say cheese!

Once you’ve accomplished that first trip out why not capture the moment with a lovely photo – one for the album!
