Being Mum: Should I Go Back To Work?

back to work mum By Mums for Mums

The big question that most mums face: Should I Go Back To Work?
After the initial period of adjustment, by the time our babies reach 6 months generally we are comfortable with our daily routine and enjoying this new, baby centred life.

Just as we become settled, have mastered the juggling of a baby and running a home plus gaining some minimal sort of social life back, BOOM…along comes the end of maternity leave and a whole host of other decisions and challenges are thrust upon us.

What should we do? What is the right thing?

Obviously I can’t answer these questions for anybody but myself as we all have different needs, different responsibilities and different ideals but a few questions helped me and my husband decide on the best route for our family so I thought I’d share…

Do you want to go back? If only this was the only question!

Do you need to go back? Permanently to cover the household bills and commitments or even temporarily in order to not lose any maternity top up payments your employer may have provided. Another often overlooked option – for your sanity, no matter how much we love our little people being at home is not for everybody and knowing our limits and personal needs help to make us the best parents possible.

Is there any flexibility? Can either of you reduce, compress or flexi your hours? Is working from home an option to reduce the length of your day? Think through your ideal situation and present it to your employer, consider possible issues they may have with your proposal and potential solutions you think may work to overcome these.

Something else? Many people feel they’ve almost become a different person whilst on maternity leave so maybe you’re game for another new challenge, want to go freelance or are thinking of starting your own business? These can all be excellent ways of earning money in a way that allows you to balance family life without having somebody to answer to or specific clock in and out times.

What are your childcare options? Can you afford nursery or a childminder or even a nanny, do you have a friend or family member that has offered to help out? Where would you be happy leaving your child? I think finding the right childcare is a bit like buying a house, you can see plenty that are ‘fine’ and on paper tick all your boxes, however if you look around there will be somewhere you visit that you quickly realise is ‘the one’ for you and your little person. Hold on until you find this place/person and it will make returning to work that little less daunting.

Guilt? This isn’t so much a question as an inevitable fact we all have to accept, as parents guilt is prewired and no matter what we chose to do we’ll question our choices. Is my child in nursery too much? Is my child going to be too clingy because they’re with me every day? Just remember, whatever you decide on you’ve given it plenty of thought and have finally settled on a situation that gives your family the best balance – your decision won’t be the same as other people’s because your situation isn’t the same and just like with everything else, don’t ever feel the need to justify your choices.

Sending love to all of those parent’s making this decision at the moment – you will make the right one.
